Where I’m from, police officers make themselves members of our community. They are polite to bystanders and talk to civilians with respect. Even if you are the person in question for an offense, they don’t approach you as a criminal, and give you all your need-to-know basis information (at least the police officers I’ve dealt with).
For years now there has been a steady rise in the amount of police patrolling the big apple, and for obvious reasons. The world is getting a bit more heinous. They made me feel safe and welcome in my own neighborhood.
I’m a law abiding citizen and not so proud resident of Rochelle Park; born and raised in New York City.
The dispatcher was able to explain that it was a terminology issue and once the applicant knew what to ask for he would be happy to help her.
For very understandable reasons, I often get questioned by Rochelle Park PD. NO BIGGIE. I am always respectful, polite and compliant. Open with a “Good day officer, how are you?” I hand over requested documentation and stay silent. Rochelle Park PD speaks to me as if I’m creating chaos or as if I’m a criminal. I am always within legal bounds, and very relaxed when asking questions. I now don’t feel welcome in my home, let alone my own town.
I moved to Rochelle Park and believed it was a family community, a community where police and civilians were equal, and thought I’d be welcomed. Police however do not make me feel welcome.
